If you want nappies that are functional, absorbent and effective, yet quick to dry, and you don't mind making a little bit of extra effort to learn how to fold them well, good old-fashioned cotton terry squares are what you need.  They're inexpensive yet they wear really well.  Whilst they will usually come clean on a cool wash, you can soak them in Napisan or boil them to sterilize them if you want to (though bleach is not recommended).  There are no elastics to rot or built in PUL covers to damage and they unfold to a single layer of fabric for easy drying. You don't have to use pins, and risk impaling a very wriggly baby, but can fasten them with a Nappi Nippa. Simples!

The only reason I can see for not considering traditional terry nappies is if you are planning to send your baby to day-care, where staff might struggle with folding and fastening the nappy properly.

When your babies have finished using their terry nappies, you can use them as general purpose cloths for all sorts of jobs around the house!
